School safety experts are set to gather in Denver Thursday for
a first-ever, statewide symposium on preventing school
violence in Colorado. We did a preview on 9News 8 a.m.
My 20.
They'll be looking at lessons learned from those who've
experienced school violence firsthand, including last fall's,
hostage situation and shootings at Platte Canyon High.
Thursday's conference will address indicators of
violence by grade level and how best to deal with threats when
they come up.
Retired FBI agent and school safety specialist Vinnie
Wincellowicz is helping to organize it. Lt. Governor Barbara
O'Brien is also part of the effort, especially prevention
efforts that she believes should start in
preschool.
They'll also be highlighting the increased
use of a hotline for students to report threats anonymously.
It's called Safe 2 Tell. That number is 1-877-542-7233. The
hotline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a
week.
